John M. Redl, 87, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, December 3, 2007, at Windsor Nursing & Rehab Center in Cedar Falls. He was born December 13, 1919, in Newcastle, Nebraska, the son of Peter H. & Ellen (Lukken) Redl.

He married Mary Ellen Lloyd on June 9, 1947, in Newcastle. John was the Valedictorian of the Newcastle High School Class of 1937. He served with the U.S. Army during WW II, where he was a prisoner of war in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. After the war, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served during the Korean Conflict. John retired from the military in 1967 after 27 years of service. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Cedar Falls for 14 years, retiring in 1981. John was a member of Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49, The American Defenders of Bataan & Corregidor, VFW, and St. Patrick Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen, of Cedar Falls; two sons, Peter (Jeanie) Redl of Cedar Falls and David (Sharon) Redl of Fairbank; three grandchildren: Christopher (Stephanie) Redl of Alexandria, Virginia, Laura (Jay) Sidels of Emmetsburg, Iowa, and Kathie (Kevin) Kane of Fairbank; ten great grandchildren, and three sisters: Margaret Paul of North Sioux City, South Dakota, Lucille Overhulser of Cedar Rapids and Marcella (Ralph) Clark of Spencer, Iowa.

John was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Loretta Redl.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 6, 2007 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with interment at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, both in Cedar Falls. Military Rites will be conducted by AMVETS Post 49. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, where a 7 p.m. Vigil service will be conducted. Visitation also one hour before service time at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.
