[Iowa State Reporter, Thursday, December 2, 1886]

Drowned in the Cedar river, at Waterloo, November 25th, 1886, Walter F., only son of Dr. W. and Mrs. F.G. Eddy, aged 12 years, 10 months and 26 days.

Trusting too fondly the seductive ice, Walter and his mates were early abroad on that beautiful Thanksgiving morning, all unconscious of the near approach of the dread shadow which sooner or later comes to all.

Swiftly the tiding spread throughout the city, and universal was the mourning and the sympathy with the stricken parents.

None but those who have been through similar experience can fully know the anguish which such an event brings. Yet, there is comfort in the thought that, in these deep sorrows, the hand of the Lord is to be seen, and that He overrules them for higher good.

The funeral was largely attended at the residence of the family, on Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. J.O. Stevenson, assisted by Rev. Dr. Rhea and Rev. M.K. Cross. The pastor read selections from the Bible and offered prayer. The familiar hymns, "Come, ye disconsolate, where'er ye languish," and "Jesus, Lover of my soul." were sung. Dr. Rhea spoke in terms of high praise and admiration of the manly and Christian character of young Walter, in connection with the boys' meeting and the Sunday school of his church. Pastor Stevenson added a few remarks, saying that he was a recent comer and had no personal acquaintance wit the deceased, emphasizing the vital connection between family piety and the Christian character of children.

The casket was profusely decorated with flowers. (the anchor and dove presented by his class in the public school,) and the placid face was viewed by a large concourse of people and pupils from the schools.

He was laid to rest in Fairview cemetery, Masters Budd Robinson, Harry and Charles Sindlinger, John McOwen, John Veach and Harry Patterson serving as pallbearers.
