WATERLOO — Lyle “Paul” Rathbone, 89, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012 at Cedar Valley Hospice Home of natural causes.

He was born Aug. 24, 1923, in Frederika, son of Lyle and Lillie Jordan Rathbone. He married Gladine Mae Conrad in April of 1947 in Tama. She died May 26, 1982. He married Elaine Hostetler on Nov. 11, 1989.

He graduated from East High School in 1941 and served in the Army Air Corp during World War II. Mr. Rathbone worked at Westside Hardware on Commercial Street, and then was a salesman for hardware, paint, real estate and Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Prudential insurances. Later he worked for Waterloo Industries as a personnel director, retiring in 1988. He attended St. Paul Presbyterian, Washburn, was a member of the Waterloo American Legion and a life member of 57th Bomb Wing Association WWII 428th Bombardment Squadron with the 310 Bombardment Group.

Survived by his wife; two sons, Jim (Lindy Kerns) of Waterloo and David of Wichita, Kan.; three grandchildren: Kathryn (Kerry) Merrifield, Julie (David) Trebel and Jacob Rathbone; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Ilene McGrane of Waterloo; two stepsons, Mark (Jenny) Hostetler of England and Jeffrey (Brenda) Hostetler of Waterloo; a stepdaughter, Lynn (Arthur) Timson of La Porte City; seven stepgrandchildren; 16 stepgreat-grandchildren; and a stepgreat-great-grandchild.

Preceded in death by a brother, Wayne; and a sister, Donna Kirkland.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Presbyterian Church, Washburn, with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery, Waterloo, with military honors by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. Visitation from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Locke Funeral Home.
