CEDAR FALLS — Herbert W. Swinton, 88, formerly of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, Waverly.

He was born Nov. 10, 1924, in Nashua, son of Fredrick and Hattie Knutson Swinton. He married Helen Reeves on June 12, 1947, in Plainfield, and they later divorced. He married Dolores Betz on March 9, 1974, in Waterloo. She died Oct. 9, 2007

Mr. Swinton graduated from Nashua High School in 1943. He was a meter reader at MidAmerican Energy for 23 years, retiring in 1987.

Survived by a son, Daniel (Julia) of Lakewood, Colo.; two daughters, Shari Jo Swinton of Denver, Colo., and Andrea Hartley of Flagstaff, Ariz.; three stepsons, Steve (Renetta) Betz of Waverly, John Betz of Fort Worth, Texas, and Christopher Betz of Waterloo; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Betz of Fort Worth; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Doris White of Emmetsburg, Helen Ascher of Clarksville and Lois Brodt of Waverly; three brothers, Donald (Dorothy) of Waverly, Maurice (Alice) of Dixon, Ill., and Roger (Marlys) of Shell Rock; and two sisters-in-law, Bernice Swinton of Waterloo and Donna Swinton of Waverly.

Preceded in death by three sisters, Mildred Schultz, Wilma Braend and Alfreeda Albaugh; and four brothers, Harold, Willard, Dale and Vernon.

Services: 10:20 a.m. Saturday at the chapel of Bartels Lutheran Home Community, Waverly, preceded by an hour of visitation, with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements by Locke Funeral Home, Waterloo.
