LA PORTE CITY — John Gerald Temeyer, 71, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of La Porte City, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, in Jacksonville after a lengthy illness.

He was born Jan. 21, 1941, son of Charles and Tillie Temeyer, and had moved to Jacksonville in 1997.

Mr. Temeyer graduated from Don Bosco High School and was a retired U.S. Army veteran retiring in 1982 at the rank of major. He served two tours in Vietnam from 1966-1967 and 1969-1970 as a helicopter pilot. Among other citations and honors he was awarded the bronze star and the distinguished flying cross.

Survived by a son, Tom of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a daughter, Leah (Tom) Keely of Jacksonville; two granddaughters, Ashley of St. Petersburg and Amanda Cornelius of Jacksonville; six brothers: Jerry of Clarion, Charles (Linda) and Don (Michelle), both of Waterloo, Tim of Treynor, Ray (Jean) of Miami and Paul (Helen) Temeyer of Manchester; three sisters: Patricia Temeyer of Brunswick, Maine, Mary (Jim) Thoma of Jesup and Anna Mae (John) Bagby of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by a brother, Michael.

Services: were held Dec. 7 in the Chapel of Hardage-Giddens Rivermead Funeral Home, Orange Park, Fla. Burial with military honors was held at Jacksonville National Cemetery.
