WATERLOO — Hugh Johnston Copeland, 84, of Green Valley, Ariz., formerly of Waterloo, died at home Nov. 25, 2012, of cancer.

He was born Jan. 27, 1928, in Corydon. He married Parkie Harris on June 22, 1952, in Independence, Mo.

Mr. Copeland graduated from Iowa State College (now Iowa State University) in 1952 with a degree in landscape architecture and city planning. He served in the U.S. Army in Japan. During his 40 years in Iowa, he established the Iowa Northland Regional Council of Governments and served as executive director, designing and developing award-winning urban renewal and community improvement initiatives across Northeast Iowa. He designed the original Cedar Falls Parkade project.

Survived by: his wife; three daughters, Valinda (Steve) Yarberry, Kathy (Tom) Brown and Laura Copeland (Rich Scott); a son, Rob (Cathy); and eight grandchildren.

Celebration of Life: 10 a.m. Friday at Valley Presbyterian Church, Green Valley.
