EVANSDALE - Kathleen Ann "Kathy" Happel, 75, of Evansdale, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo, from complications of lung cancer.

She was born April 26, 1937, in Independence, daughter of Delbert and Martha Hefner Schoonover. She married Harvey Happel on June 20 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua.

Mrs. Happel attended school in Vinton and Brandon. She was a waitress at the Ramada and at Joe's in Evansdale. She then was employed at KPR for 10 years. Most recently, she was a cook at Covenant Medical Center.

Survived by her husband; three sons: Dennis (Mary) Ricker of Burton, Mich., and Douglas Hammond and Kevin Coburn, both of Evansdale; two stepsons, Scott Happel of Houston and Steven Happel of Dallas; a daughter, Pamela (Jeff) Lawless of Waterloo; 12 grandchildren, Justin and Renee Ricker, Leslie and Lindie Hammond, Amanda Tomlinson, Tim Shumaker, James Swehla, Alex Hammond and Sarah, Casey, Hollie and Shelbie Lawless; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Paula Hammond; a brother, Harvey Schoonover; and a sister, Bernice "Aunt Tootie" Coates.

Memorial service: 11 a.m. Friday at Ascension Lutheran Church, with inurnment at a later date. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, an Overton Family Service, Waterloo, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.

Kathy was a very hard worker and was a selfless person. She always put her kids and others first. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
