Richard "Shorty" Hilyard, 80, of Waterloo died Tuesday, February 13, 2007, at Windsor Nursing & Rehab Center of complications of diabetes and alzheimers.

He was born December 17, 1926 in North Liberty, son of Clement and Florence Leatherby Hilyard. He graduated from Corwith High School in Corwith Iowa.

He married Erma Jean Baldwin on July 29, 1949 at St. Edwards Catholic Church Waterloo. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during WWII. He was employed as a truck driver for Gateway Transportation retiring in 1984.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Scott (Barb) Hilyard of Waterloo; one daughter, Valerie (Dwight) Franck of Joliet, Illinois; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Arend of Algona, IA and Fern Olson of Beloit, Wisconsin; two sisters-in-law, Lela Hilyard of Riverton, Wyoming and Dorthee Hilyard of Wacomi, Minnesota.

He was preceded by his parents; two brothers, Louie & Weston; one brother-in-law, Eddie Arend.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at St. Edwards Catholic Church. Inurnment will take place at a later date. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church where full military rites will be conducted by the Iowa National Guard.

Memorials may be made to the family.
