Mary Jean Mortell of 3720 Village Place, Apt. 5224, Waterloo, died Saturday Jan. 27, 2007, at the Friendship Village Med. Center of natural causes.

She was born March 26, 1928, in Kankakee, Illinois, daughter of J. William and Hattie A. Purtill Mortell.

She graduated from Kankakee High School in 1946 and received her BA degree at Dominican University then Rosary College in River Forest Illinois in 1950. Mary came to Cedar Falls in 1958 to be assistant dormitory director of Lawther Hall at UNI then Iowa State Teachers College. In 1960 she took the position of secretary to Dr. Ross Nielsen head of the Department of Teaching at the UNI Price Laboratory School retiring from that position in 1983.

Mary enjoyed knitting camping and golf. She was a member of St. Edward Church.

She is survived by four nieces and their families: Christine Plazas of Irvington, NY, Linda Bunda of Rossford, OH, Sheila Finan of Hinsdale, IL, and Elizabeth Duebenetoby of Poway, CA; also a longtime friend Evelyn Hart of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister-Frances Mortell, and two brothers, John and James Mortell.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at St. Edwards Catholic Church with burial at 1 p.m. Friday at Kankakee Memorial Gardens in Kankakee Illinois. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South St. where there will be a senior citizen rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation also for an hour before services at the church on Thursday.

Memorials may be made to Cedar Valley Hospice Hospice Link or Friendship Village Medical Center.
