Robert M. Thein 83, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at Manor Care Nursing and Rehab Center, Waterloo, following complications from surgery at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

He was born May 22, 1925 in Elkport son of Dr. Garfield M. Thein and Julia I. McDonald Thein. He married Betty A. Jens on July 12,1947 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua.

Mr. Thein graduated from Oelwein High School in 1943, attended the University of Iowa for a short time before entering the Army on March 30, 1944. He served in BTRY C749 Field Artillery Battalion stationed in Okinawa, Korea, and Japan during World War II. Honorably Discharged on April 13, 1946 received an APT Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Ribbon and a Letter of Commendation for helping capture 3 Japanese soldiers.

Graduated from Upper Iowa University, Fayette in 1949 with a BA degree.

He worked at Rath Packing Co. Local Shipping Department for 35 years and was an Agent for Arthur Insurance.

He was a Lifetime Member of the Elks Club and the American Legion.

Survived by his wife, a son Terry (Jan) Thein of Iowa City, his daughters: Tammi (David) Cusmano of Cedar Falls, Candy (Tim) Tullis of Waterloo and Bobbi Paulsen of Reno, NV.

Grandchildren: Sarah (Ray) Dennis of Lithia, FL, Lori (Matt) Lee of Waterloo, Rob Thein of Coralville, IA, Stacey Tullis of Baltimore, Maryland, Mike Tullis of North Liberty, and Casie (Coty) Weaver of Reno, NV

Great Grandchildren: Zoe and Sophia Lee and Sydni and Jacob Dennis, twin sisters Jean Ferris and Joan Elmer both of West Union and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his parents and his brother Howard A. Thein

Interment and Celebration of Life at a later date with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, IA. No visitation or funeral service. The Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel in Waterloo is in charge of arrangements.

His favorite pastime was jitterbugging at the Oelwein Coliseum and Electric Park Ballroom.
