WATERLOO — Robert Francis Bernard, 96, of Waterloo, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, at Ravenwood Nursing & Rehab Center.

He was born Oct. 21, 1916, in Gilbertville, son of Albert W. and Vestina A. Hopper Bernard. He married Alice L. Keiderling on Dec. 27, 1939, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Waterloo. She died in March of 1975. He married Elner Kelling Clapp on Aug. 8, 1987, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Waterloo.

He served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. Mr. Bernard owned and operated B&B Auto Repair in Waterloo for 59 years, retiring in 2007.

Survived by two sons, James A. (Linda) of Two Rivers, Wis., and George R. of Waterloo; his second wife of La Porte City; a stepdaughter, Sally (Jack) McNally of Evansdale; and two stepsons, Bill (Denise) Clapp of Waterloo and Tom (Tracy) Clapp of La Porte City.

Preceded in death by a son, Robert N.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, preceded by an hour of visitation, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31 with flag presentation by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Hagarty–Waychoff–Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is in charge of arrangements.
