MRS. MARIETTA HILL DIED THIS MORNING

Resided in County 50 Years and in
Waterloo a Quarter Century

Mrs. Marietta Hill, a resident of Black Hawk County for over fifty-six years, and of Waterloo for twenty-five years, passed away this morning at 6 o'clock at the home of her son, E. E. Hill, 221 Mullan Avenue East, with whom she had made her home for a number of years.

The aged lady had been confined to her home since last November when she underwent a slight operation, but the immediate cause of her death was uremic poisoning and convulsions, with which she was taken sick on Sunday night. Her condition had been critical since that time and all the near relatives were summoned to her bedside and were present when death came.

Marietta Williams was born in Bowmansville, Erie County, New York, July 29, 1821, and spent her girlhood years in Buffalo. She came with her parents to Black Hawk County in 1855. They lived for a time in Waterloo and then bought a farm three miles south of Waterloo in West Waterloo Township, which was her home until January 2, 1858, when she was married to Elam Hill, who owned the adjoining farm. In 1882 they moved into Waterloo and lived for many years at 627 Eighth Street West. Mr. Hill died June 15, 1896, and four years after his death Mrs. Hill moved to the home in which she died.

During the years of her residence in Waterloo West, she attended the First M. E. Church and was active in the church work, but since living in her present home, she attended services at Grace M. E. Church as long as her health permitted. "Grandma Hill", as she was called by many, was known and loved by all and her death will bring wide sorrow. She was a member of the Black Hawk Early Settlers' Association and attended every meeting. The older residents of the county will especially remember her.

The surviving relatives are two sons and one daughter. Charles W., who is on the home farm; Mrs. F. M. Billings of Hudson, and E. E. Hill of Waterloo; one brother, J. W. Williams of Waterloo; eleven grandchildren, including Mrs. Orbie Nicholson of Hudson, and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral arrangements will not be completed until word is received from the out of town relatives.
