Elizabeth “Betty” Mulcay, 99, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, September 17, 2012, at the Western Home.

She was born July 8, 1913 in Albert Lee, Minnesota the daughter of Patrick John and Blanche Steinke Mulcay. She often told her dad, “I liked the name of Mulcay so much – that I’ve always kept it.” She was also very proud of her Irish ancestry.

Betty graduated from Waterloo East High School. She received her two year Kindergarten and Primary diploma from Iowa State Teacher’s College, then taught at Rowley, Lisbon, and Marengo, Iowa. She completed her course work to receive her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Iowa State Teacher’s College and taught in Springfield and Rockford, Illinois. While in Rockford she received her Master’s Degree from the University of Illinois. She went on to earn 38 hours of graduate work from the University of Illinois, University of Denver and Redlands University to qualify for her Guidance and Counseling Certificates in Illinois. Betty spent fifteen years in the Counseling Department at Jefferson High School in Rockford, until retiring in August of 1975.

In retirement Betty enjoyed traveling extensively with her sister and brother-in-law, Kay and Elmo Moore. They visited Russia twice, Red China, Japan, Manila, Hong Kong, Macau, Ireland (several times), Belgium, Holland, Germany, Luxembourg, France, England, Wales, Scotland, Austria, Italy, Liechtenstein, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, and Mexico, as well as every state in the United States except Oregon. One summer Betty spent over two weeks in Alaska.

Betty is survived by her sister Kay Moore of Waterloo, Nephews: Patrick Moore and his wife Mary Ann of Waterloo; Michael Pitzel of Taylor, Nebraska; and Patrick Pitzel of Nebraska; a Great Niece Regan McCarthy, her husband Tom and their children Thomas and Jack of Eldridge; a Great Nephew Mason Moore, his wife Sara and their daughter Avery of Waterloo.

Betty is preceded in death by a sister Mary Pat Pitzel.

Services 1:00 p.m. Friday, September 21, 2012 at Locke Funeral Home; burial at Fairview Cemetery, Waterloo, Iowa
