Evelyn Fairbanks Riedel, 99, of Waterloo, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at Parkview Manor in Reinbeck. She was born December 29, 1912 in Monticello, Iowa, the daughter of Allen T. Fairbanks and Cora Condit Fairbanks.

She married Otto W. Riedel of Wilhelmshaven, Germany, on August 12, 1932 in Galena, Ill. Otto predeceased her on January 31, 1972.

Evelyn graduated from Monticello High School and continued selected training and certification in a variety of areas such as Accounting, Management, Supervision, Income Tax, Nutrition Concerns and Controversies, Millinery, Community Involvement and China Painting.

She was proud to be a Campfire Girl when she was young and for many years was a Girl Scout Leader, Finley Hospital Auxiliary President, First Presbyterian Auxiliary President, Violin Teacher, Physician’s office assistant/bookkeeper and an Administrator/Superintendent of Mt. Pleasant Retirement Home, in Dubuque.

Our mother was an incredible person and provided us great inspiration toward living life with integrity and pride. Our parents wanted to be surrounded with children all of their lives, so within a span of 23 years, they raised six, very independent children. Her capable hands and creative mind were always busy and evident. She had an incredible talent in the art of tailoring, designing and sewing clothing/coats, millinery, afghans, playing the violin and later china painting. Mom loved the aspects of accounting in business and was a great cook, owning a family restaurant. She always treated others with genuine concern and respect and her smile, humor and warmhearted nature was contagious. Mom was a wonderful storyteller of times long ago and loved to sing children’s songs and recite poetry. She embraced responsibility, held strong religious beliefs and maintained an optimistic outlook on life that will be our inspiration as we continue to live out her legacy.

She is survived by her six children; Patsy (Charles) Duckworth, Orlando, FL; Lois (Jack) Christensen, Estero, FL; Kenneth (Susan) Riedel, Ankeny, IA; Janice (Paul) Sowle, Amarillo, TX; Maxine (David) Barrows, Waterloo, IA; and Katherine (Thomas) Langlas, Waterloo, IA; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
