Eugene “Gene” Ross Wirth died Sunday, June 16, 2002 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo, Iowa after a 23 month battle with lung cancer. Eugene was born in Waterloo, Iowa June 25, 1926, son of Ross L. and Elsie Krueger Wirth.

He attended Waterloo schools, graduating from East High in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was recalled during the Korean War each time as Radio Dispatcher on a Destroyer.

He was united in marriage to Darlene Worley on April 2, 1950 in Waterloo, Iowa. He worked for Northwestern Bell, US West, Quest for 40 years, retiring in 1985. He was the Manager of Central Offices in NE Iowa.

Eugene (Gene) is survived by his wife Darlene; two sons, David Eugene and Carol, his wife, and children Andrew and Allie Wirth; Dr. Michael Jay and Laurie, his wife and children Megan and Kelly Wirth; and one daughter, Cindy Lou and her husband Dr. Dick Nemmers and children, Ben and Jamie Nemmers.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Frances Manahl.

Funeral services were at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls with burial in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery in Waterloo.

Memorials may be given to the Cedar Valley Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
