CEDAR FALLS- Kenneth F. Backens, 93, of Waterloo died Monday, September 3, 2012, at Sartori Hospital in Cedar Falls.

He was born July 4, 1919 in Reinbeck, son of Carl R. and Bertha (Stephens) Backens. He married Mary Crane on June 21, 1941 in Cedar Falls.

She preceded him in death on August 28, 2012.

He graduated from Reinbeck High School in 1936. In the Army, he served in the Phillipean Islands, in WWII. He farmed, later becoming a machinist at John Deere, a position he held for thirty years.

Survived by two sons, Donald (Chris) and Eric, both of Rapid City, SD; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by his wife; one son, Kenny F. Backens; two brothers, Lyle, and Orville Backens; two sisters, Lois and Grace.

Services: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Richardson Funeral Service with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. Military honors provided by the Cedar Falls AMVETS post #49. Visitation for one hour prior to service at the funeral home.
