Funeral of August
Kurtz Awaits Word
of a Soldier Son

Funeral arrangements for August Kurtz, whose death occurred yesterday afternoon, the result of injuries received when he was knocked down and run over by his own automobile Monday afternoon, have not been completed but await word from a son, who recently landed in, America with the thirty fifth division.

Mr Kurtz was born in Baden, Germany, Feb. 17, 1855, and came to America at the age of 18. After a six months' residence in the east, he came to Black Hawk County, lowa, locating on a farm, near Gilbertville. After having operated five different farms in this county, he retired, moving to Waterloo about four years ago.

When 25 years of age, he was united in marriage to Wilhelminia Falk, who, with nine children, survives. The children are: John K., Jesup; Frank, Waterloo; Mrs. Matt Thomas, Gilbertville; Mrs. Mike Erpelding, Jesup; William K., who is in service and recently landed in America with the thirty-fifth-division; Mrs. Joe Ortner, Dunkerton: Charles, Henry and Clara, at home. All efforts to locate the son in service had proved futile up until noon today and it is thought he is en route to a western camp for discharge.

Mr. and Mrs. Kurtz had started for Dunkerton to visit their daughter, Mrs. Ortner, who is now recovering from a serious illness, and because of the condition of the roads , had turned back and were just this side of Dewar when the accident occurred. Mr. Kurtz and left the car to crank it when the machine started up, knocking him to the ground and running over his body. The car continued down the road, crossed a ditch and climbed over a fence, and was finally stopped by a farmer after circling around in a pasture several times. Mrs. Kurtz, who was in the car, was unhurt, but is suffering from severe mental shock.

The remains were prepared for burial at the O'Keef & Town Mortuary and later taken to the home, 216 Logan Avenue. Funeral services will be at St. Mary's Catholic Church, of which decedent was a member. Definite particulars concerning the service will be announced later.
