WATERLOO, IOWA — Arlan R. French, 74, of Waterloo, died Monday, July 16, at Allen Hospital from complications of cancer.

He was born June 3, 1938, in Riceville, son of William and Margaret Shupe French. He married Kathie Lee Meyers on June 1, 1963, in Waterloo. He married Cora L. Thompson on February 13, 1999, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

He graduated from Waterloo East High School in 1956. He completed a four-year journeyman maintenance mechanic license while with John Deere. He worked at Deere and Co. as a journeyman maintenance mechanic, retiring in 1986 as the supervisor of the foundry building and grounds. Mr. French served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1960, and was a lifetime member of Evansdale AmVets Post 32.

Survived by his wife; two daughters, Chris (Todd) Winstead of Elk Run Heights and Cyndi (Jeff) Schake of Waterloo; two stepdaughters, Deb (Jeff) Lickness of Hudson and Janice Winkelmann of Kansas City, Mo.; a stepson, John (Denise) Thompson of Morriston, Fla.; three grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren: Joel Winstead, Carson Schake, Cameron Schake, Jeni Thompson, Megan Lickness and J.D. Lickness; a brother, Rick (Linda) of Waterloo; and a sister, Cheri (Dennis) Stoneman of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; a brother, Charles; and a sister-in-law, Sharon.

Memorial services were 11 a.m. today at Locke Funeral Home, with inurnment in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by Evansdale AmVets Post 31 and Waterloo AmVets Post 19.
