WATERLOO — Harvey J. Hess III, 73, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, July 18, at Covenant Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 14, 1939, in Waterloo, son of Harvey J. Jr. and Esther Miller Hess.

He graduated from Orange Township High School and McPhearson College. Mr. Hess received a master’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa. He taught at Hawkeye Community College and UNI, worked at Waterloo/Cedar Falls Courier and Spokane, Wash. newspapers, the Hearst Center and Waterloo Center of the Arts. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Parish. He was a Haiku poet, librettist, critic, and author. His Haiku was internationally published and he was listed in the International Directory of Haiku Poets, he had composed five operas, and had received a lifetime achievement award for his Hawaiian lyric poetry, education and art criticism.

Survived by a sister, Lucy (Bill) Schempp of Decorah; a sister, Linda Hess of Spokane, Wash.; a nephew, Corbin (Gretchen) Schempp of Decorah; and a niece, Bethany Schempp of Chicago.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Episcopal Parish, Waterloo, with burial in Orange Township Cemetery. Locke Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Memorials: in lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hearst Center for the Arts, Cedar Falls.
