GARBES, SHAFER, WEEFLE, LERCH, HORSMAN

WATERLOO, IOWA - James W. Garbes Sr., 76, of Andalusia, Illinois, formerly of Waterloo, died at home Friday, June 1, 2012.

He was born June 25, 1935, in Clarksville, son of Vern and Viola (Weefle) Garbes. He married Joanne Shafer, who preceded him in death.

He later married Sue Lerch Horsman on October 10, 2008, in Rock Island, Illinois. Mr. Garbes was employed for more than 25 years with Iron Workers Local 89. He later was employed by Linwood Mines, Buffalo, Iowa, and Enterprise, Davenport. He was a member of the Milan American Legion 569, where he served as trustee, and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

He is survived by his wife; a son, Butch of Rock Island; a daughter, Jolene Barton of Waterloo; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and great-great-grandson; several stepchildren and stepgrandchildren; four sisters, Judy Halbmier, Jane Knebel, Linda Sickman and Patty Hines; and two brothers, Larry and Billy.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Vern Jr.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan, Illinois, with burial in Rock Island National Cemetery, with military honors by American Legions 569/200 and Veterans of Foreign Wars 1303. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
