LA PORTE CITY, IOWA - Carl L. Smith, 84, of Manchester, formerly of La Porte City, died Thursday, July 5, 2012 at Good Neighbor Home, Manchester.

He was born Oct. 22, 1927, in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., son of Frank S. and Florence Clark Smith. He married Virginia Ann Tory on Oct. 7, 1954, in Poplar Bluff, Mo. She died June 3, 2003.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Smith worked as an independent trucker, retiring in 1989.

Survived by two sons, Mike (Barb) and Keith, both of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Teresa (Ken) Lassen of La Porte City and Janet (Jeff) Francois of Holy Cross; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Oscar (Tammy) of Oxley, Mo.; and two sisters, Brenda (Wayne) Dollins of Puxico, Mo., and Hilda (Jerry) Burkhead of Poplar Bluff.

Preceded in death by two brothers; and two sisters.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday at Garden View Chapel, where visitation begins at noon, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138, VFW Post 1623 and the Iowa Army National Guard Honor Detail.

Memorials may be directed to the Good Neighbor Home, Marietta Place, Manchester.
