WATERLOO - John M. Carpenter, 72, of Waterloo, died Friday, May 18, 2012 at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.

He was born March 4, 1940, in Waverly, son of Marshall E. and Catherine Wieres Carpenter. He married Nancy L. Turner on May 7, 1960, at St. Edward's Catholic Church, Waterloo.

Mr. Carpenter graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1958. He owned and operated Carpenter's Restaurant for many years. He also worked for Paramount Distribution Co. for 15 years.

Survived by his wife; a son, Michael (Eva) of Waterloo; four daughters: Jean Clark (Neil Goodell) of Cedar Falls, Linda (Jason) Gambetty of Oregon, Wis., and Mary Steffen and Susan Hathaway (Nathan Milius), both of Waterloo; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren with another on the way; a brother, Joseph (Sharon) of Waterloo; and six sisters: Joyce Kammeyer, Mary Carpenter and Ann (Don) Hein, all of Waterloo, Carol (Tim) Sullivan of West Des Moines, Janice (Ed) Starkey of Iron River, Mich., and Kathy (Dan) Gable of Iowa City.

Preceded in death by two sisters, Patricia Anderson and Mary Joann Carpenter.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Edward's Catholic Church, Waterloo, with burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Waverly. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, and also for an hour before services Thursday at the church.
