WATERLOO - James "Horn" Montgomery Jr., 74, of Waterloo, died Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Allen Hospital of natural causes.

He was born Feb. 22, 1938, in Waterloo, son of James and Narvel Weems Montgomery. He married Charlene Western on Sept. 4, 1965, in Waterloo.

Mr. Montgomery served in the U.S. Army and retired as a supervisor from John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works.

Survived by his wife; a daughter, Elizabeth (Scott) Crowley of Waterloo; a son, Dr. Travis J. Montgomery of Indianapolis; two grandchildren, Nia and Brandon Crowley; four sisters: Mary Lou Frizell, Lorraine (Otis) Gaston, Bonnie (Ira) Frizell and Eva Culp, all of Waterloo; and four brothers, Willie (Norma), Curtis, Alfred and Glen, all of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Ennis; and a sister, Narvel Ann Partee.

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday at Antioch Baptist Church, with burial in Garden of Memories. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 138 and VFW Post 1623. Visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Sanders Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the family at 1416 N. Barclay St., where they will receive friends.

James was the founder of Swingers Golf Club and was involved in the junior program. He was staunch advocate for Waterloo East High sports and was a member of the Waterloo Golf Hall of Fame.
