WATERLOO — Kevin Scott Knutson, 62, of Fremont, Calif., formerly of Waterloo, died at his home Saturday, May 5, 2012 of brain cancer.

He was born Sept. 11, 1949, in Moline, Ill., son of Robert E. and Peggy Lovelace Knutson. He married Mary Jung in 1969 and they later divorced. In 2001 he married Julia Gonzalez.

Mr. Knutson was a 1967 graduate of Waterloo West High School, earned a degree in biology and chemistry from California State University, then received a teaching certificate from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls. He taught for the Waterloo School District and was claim agent for the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. After many years with the railroad, he became a legal investigator for Swisher and Court Law Firm.

Survived by his wife; a son, Jedediah “Jed;” a daughter, Degin Muehling; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Terry; and two sisters, Kimberly Vidales and Julie Knutson.

Preceded in death by a sister, Kyle Knutson.

Memorial service: May 26 at Fremont Community Church, Fremont, with local memorial services pending.

Kevin enjoyed life’s simple pleasures and had a special appreciation for plant and animal life, and had many talents and interests. Some of his children’s most memorable experiences include operating his son’s electric train set, walking together along the railroad tracks, skipping rocks, fishing and walking for miles around San Francisco.
