Frederick Tyrone “Ty” Carter, 63, of Irving, Texas, formerly of Waterloo, died Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at St. Paul’s Medical Center, Dallas.

He was born April 27, 1948, in Waterloo, to the late Frederick Carter and Corena Reed Carter. He was baptized at Antioch Baptist Church. Ty married Karen Winder in August 1971. He graduated from East High School in 1966 and received his B.A. in mechanical engineering in 1971 from Iowa State University. In 2009 he was inducted into the East High School Hall of Fame.

A 28-year management career with AT&T moved them to Missouri, Texas and New Jersey until retirement. In 1999 he moved to Atlanta to work for KMC Telecom Corp., retiring after six years. His next and favorite career was teaching engineering and technology classes at Tucker High School, Atlanta, until his health deteriorated. He was an active member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Lawrenceville, Ga., where he was chosen “2008 Man of the Year.” He was a charter member of the ISU chapter of Omega Psi Phi, Inc., and other local chapters. He loved family and life, especially remodeling projects and fishing.

During these past two years of illness, Ty showed incredible courage and faith.

Survived by his devoted wife and son, Austin, of Irving; three sisters: Loleta (Will) Montgomery of Waterloo, Regina (Alease) Evans of Riverdale, Ga., and Lorrie (Lawrence) Banks of Fort Worth, Texas; two brothers, Duane (Deborah) Carter of Lithonia, Ga., and Jeffrey (Jean) Carter of Garland, Texas; other family members and good friends. Preceded in death by his parents; maternal grandparents, Freeman and Isabella Reed; and paternal grandparents, George and Willie Ann Carter.

Services were held on May 5 in Atlanta and May 12 in Salisbury.
