WATERLOO — M.L. “Red” Smith, 86, of Waterloo, died Sunday, May 13, 2012 in Marshalltown of natural causes.

He was born July 12, 1925, in Natchez, Miss., son of Earnest and Blanche Stewart Smith. He married Tillie Evans on Oct. 12, 1955, in Preston, Minn.

Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was formerly employed at Hawkeye Steel for 30 years.

Survived by his wife; three sons, Robert L. Smith and Charles Ellis, both of Waterloo, and Thomas Ellis of Bladensburg, Md.; a special granddaughter, Kim Ellis-Love of Waterloo; a special niece, Dora Lee Payton of Illinois; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by two brothers, James and Walter Sr.; and two sisters, Lucille Green and Susan Gray.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Payne Memorial A.M.E. Church, where full military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post 138 and VFW Post 1623. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation an hour before services Friday at the church. Sanders Funeral Service is assisting the family.

Memorials may be directed to the family at 622 Cottage St., where they will receive friends.

Red enjoyed hunting, gambling, sports, quality joking and the love of his grandchildren.
