PALMETTO, Fla. — Robert G. Papach, 79, formerly of Waterloo, died Saturday, May 5, 2012, at Tidewell Hospice House, Bradenton, Fla.

He was born April 28, 1933, and grew up on the family farm in LeRoy Minn., son of Joseph and Ila Papach. He was raised by his grandparents, Sella and Henry (Hank) Hendrickson. He married Norma Schuchhardt and they had a daughter Susan. Later he remarried Shirley Slater, and they had a son James.

Mr. Papach attended LeRoy High School, then went on to work at various construction jobs, finally settling on heavy equipment mechanics. He worked at the Weisman’s Scrap Yard in Waterloo, Hurst Construction in Des Moines, and retired from Van Hauen and Associates in Des Moines. In 2001 he moved to Florida to live close to both his daughter and son. In Florida he spent his retirement surrounded by family and friends, and enjoyed all the time he spent with them.

He is survived by a son, James Papach and daughter in-law Shawna Papach of Palmetto; a daughter, Susan Rowe of North Port, Fla.; three grandchildren, DJ Leopard (grandson) of Wisconsin, Jessica Drewis (granddaughter) of Florida and James R. Papach (grandson) of Florida; great-grandson Aedan Drewis; a brother, Denny Hanson of Rochester, Minn.; stepsister Carol Bauer of Tampa, Fla.; stepbrother Kenny Hanson of Dorchester; and half brother David Hanson of Albert Lea, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Papach of Waterloo; mother Ila and father Joseph Papach; brother Joe Hanson of Rochester, Minn.; stepbrothers Foster Hanson of Dallas and Don Hanson of LeRoy; and stepsister Bette Christy of Waterloo.

A private burial will be held at Waterloo Memorial Cemetery.
