WATERLOO — Howard J. Hansen, 93, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Cedar Valley Hospice Home.

He was born Oct. 10, 1918, in Waterloo, son of Peter and Rosa Repp Hansen. He married Bernice Pries on Sept. 21, 1940, in Waterloo.

Mr. Hansen was employed at Chamberlain Manufacturing as a set-up man for 40 years. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, serving in the 84th infantry division, “The Rail Splitters,” until January 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star, three major battle stars, including the Battle of the Bulge, and five military decorations. He was a member of Sullivan Brothers VFW Post 1623 and an honorary life member of Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138.

Survived by his wife; three sons, LeRoy (Sharon) of Sterling Heights, Mich., and Larry and Lyle, both of Waterloo; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Thelma Wilson of Eugene, Ore., Rosemary (Roy) Maddox of Shirley, Ark., and Maxine Pries of Cedar Falls.

Preceded in death by a son, Loyd; three brothers, Robert and two infants; and two sisters, Doris Blau and Marg Stiner.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday at Garden View Chapel Funeral Home, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Full military honors will be accorded by Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138, Sullivan Brothers VFW Post 1623 and the Iowa Army National Guard Honors Detail. Visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and an hour before services Saturday at the funeral home.
