WASHBURN, IOWA - Darlene E. Westphal, 87, of Washburn, died Saturday, June 9, 2012, at Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo, of dementia.

She was born January 6, 1925, in Muscatine, daughter of Clarence and Ethel Fowler Carr, and was raised by her foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Blakeman of Jesup. She married Harland Shimp in October 1945, and they later divorced. She then married Clair Westphal on September 9, 1968. He died in 1983.

Mrs. Westphal graduated from Jesup High School in 1944. He was

employed at John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works as a core counter, then at Hinson Manufacturing, where she worked in different departments.

Later she cleaned several homes in the Cedar Valley. She was a member of Waterloo Seventh-day Adventist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Jeannine Breyfogle and Kathleen "Kat" (Bear) Weber, both of Waterloo; a son, Jon Westphal of Waterloo; a foster daughter, Darla (Lyle) Dempster of Stout; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Goldeen Wirt of Denmark.

She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Dan Breyfogle; and a sister, Shirley Oertel.

Family-directed memorial service: 11 a.m. Sunday at Waterloo Seventh-day Adventist Church, 550 West Airline Highway, followed by visitation.
