WATERLOO, IOWA — Rodney Lynn "Rip" Gardner-Nickelson, 45, of Waterloo, died April 20, 2012, at the VA Hospital, Des Moines, Iowa.

He was born on September 8, 1966, in Iowa City, son of Teddy Newell and Magdalene McIntosh Gardner.

He was a 1986 graduate of Central High School, then served in the U.S. Navy as an air traffic controller. He was employed at Ron Webber and Apex, both in Waterloo, and Vendos Bottling Co., Fresno, Calif.

He is survived by two daughters, Leann Gardner-Nickelson of Freso and Kenseisha Harrington (Antwain) Wells of Waterloo; three grandchildren; four brothers, Anthony Gardner, O.C. Newell and Robert Robinson, all of Waterloo, and Andrew (Kinda) Kapayan of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Velveeta Gardner (Will) Roberson of Waterloo and Naomi Newell of Rockford, Ill.; special friend, Judy Brown of Waterloo; and his guardian family, Melvina Scott of Waterloo, Kateea Scott of Greensburg, N.C., Johnny (Kayla) Scott of Minneapolis and James (Stacy) Scott of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Henry and Kate McIntosh, and Robert "Hard Walking Bob" and Mary Nickelson, who raised him.

Services will be on Saturday at Henderson Funeral Home, 3500 Sixth Ave., Des Moines, preceded by an hour of visitation.
