EVANSDALE — Calvin "Sonny" Farris, 87, of Evansdale, died Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at Cedar Valley Hospice Home, Waterloo.

He was born March 29, 1925, in Washington Township, Franklin County, son of Calvin Edson and Jennie Hannah Irene Arends Farris. He married Marie W. Conger on April 19, 1944, in Washburn. She died in January 1992.

Mr. Farris worked at Rath Packing Co., Waterloo, for more than 25 years. He relocated to California in 1965 and worked for California Parks Department in San Bruno, until returning to the Cedar Valley in 1980. After retirement, he worked as a custodian for the city of Evansdale for nine years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Pacific theater.

Survived by a son, Dennis of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; two daughters, Jeanette (Ken) Barnell of Cedar Rapids and Janet (David) Hawley of Elk Run Heights; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Charlotte Sampica of Waterloo; a sister-in-law, Cleo Farris of Waterloo; and a brother-in-law, Jack Beckman of San Angelo, Texas.

Preceded in death by a brother, Jack; and three sisters, Dorothy Wilson, Shirley Beckman and Joan Caughron.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, Evansdale, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo. Full military honors will be conducted by Evansdale AMVETS Post 31, Waterloo AMVETS Post 31 and the Iowa Army National Guard Honors Detail. Visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel, Waterloo, and for an hour before services Monday at the church.
