WATERLOO, IOWA - Elwood R. Lindquist, 92, of Lake-view Lodge Friendship Village, died Wednesday, June 27, 2012, of natural causes.

He was born Nov. 10, 1919, in Homestead, Wis., son of Victor and Amanda (Johnson) Lindquist. He graduated from school in Homestead, and spent two terms with Nicolet National Forest CCC Camp, Long Lake, Minn.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1941 and spent four years in the service — two years in Panama guarding the canal, attaining the rank of S/Sgt.

Elwood married Helen M. Eklund on Jan. 2, 1945, in Duluth, Minnesota.

After leaving the service, he enrolled under the G.I. Bill in the Wisconsin State Industrial Commission Apprenticeship Program for returning veterans, in the art of pattern making.

In November 1954, he moved to Waterloo and began working for John Deere Tractor Works. He was hired by the Product Engineering Center (PEC), retiring in November 1981 as supervisor of the product engineering pattern shop. In May of 1999, he and Helen moved to Friendship Village where she passed away April 6, 2006.

He was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church of Waterloo.

He is survived by his son, Kenneth (Lynda) of Morton, Illinois; two daughters, Kathryn (Terry Newendorp) Lindquist of Rockville, Maryland, and Vicki Hembree of Waterloo; and three grandchildren, Eric Lindquist of Columbia, Md., and Nicholas Hembree and Rachel Hembree, both of Waterloo.

Elwood is preceded in death by his wife, Helen; son-in-law Roger Hembree; parents; infant brother Ernest; and sister Helen (George) Hart.

Memorial services are noon Saturday, June 30, at First Baptist Church, preceded by inurnment in Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 29, at Locke Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Baptist Church.
