Mabel E. Powell (1918-2009)

CEDAR FALLS- Mabel E. Powell, 90, formerly of the Western Home Communities and rural New Hartford, died Friday, October 16, 2009, at Windsor Nursing and Rehab Center.

She was born November 29, 1918, on a farm east of New Hartford, daughter of Jens and Elna Christensen. Mabel graduated from Cedar Falls High School, attended Gates Business College, and worked as a bookkeeper at Holst Printing in Cedar Falls. She married Allan Powell on December 4, 1942, at Camp Carson, Colorado Springs, Colorado. He preceded her in death August 19, 2007.

She and Allan farmed in Dysart, Hudson, Colorado, returning to New Hartford in 1954. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Parkersburg where she taught Sunday School and Bible School.

Survived by four daughters, Elaine M. (David) Reents of Wellsburg, Jan K. (Jim) Cox of Wellsburg, Marilyn J. Powell of Waterloo, and Marcia D. Laudick of Waterloo; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, and a sister, Velda LeMay of Springfield, IL.

Preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret Cantine and Virginia Sorensen, a brother, Howard Christensen, and son-in-law, Jim Boelman.

Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Western Home Communities Chapel, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, Parkersburg. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Richardson Funeral Home, and for one hour before services Tuesday at the chapel.

Memorials may be directed to Calvary Baptist Church in Parkersburg, or the American Cancer Society.
