CEDAR FALLS - Dr. William H. Dreier, 88, of Western Home Communities Windhaven, formerly of 2604 College St., died Wednesday, Nov. 22, at home of congestive heart failure.

He was born May 19, 1918, in Detroit, son of William H. and Ruth Ritner Dreier. He married Mary Ellen Shanafelt April 13, 1942, in Sigourney.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the European Theater, and received his bachelor of science degree from Iowa State University, Ames, and his master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Minnesota. Mr. Dreier was employed by the University of Northern Iowa as an instructor from 1949 until retiring as professor of education in 1985.

He was past president of the National Rural Education Association and first chairperson for elementary schools of the North Central Association of Schools. He was a speaker and authored several publications on one-room country schools, was a senior member of the Archturus Club, charter member of Valley View Baptist Church and served many years as church moderator, and for eight years had been a member of the general board of American Baptist Churches USA.

Survived by his wife; three sons, Dan of Eugene, Ore., Ted (Christine) of Portland, Ore., and James (LeAnne) of Iowa City; two daughters, Ruth Dreier of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and Ritta Dreier (Rocky Siglow) of Eugene; 10 grandchildren, Hannah Clotere, James, Casey, Daniel and Derek Dreier, Ariella Sutton, Carrie Siglow, Virginia Dreier, Thomas Dreier and Royce Siglow; a great-grandson, Jordan Dreier; and a sister, Lucille Duitscher of Ames.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Marian Carol, in infancy; two brothers, Robert and Walter; and a sister, Elizabeth Henning.

Memorial services: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Valley View Baptist Church, with inurnment in Point Pleasant Cemetery, Hubbard, at a later date. There will be no visitation; his body was donated to the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy. Richardson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
