WATERLOO — Othmar “Ott” Joseph Meier, 89, of La Porte City, died Friday, March 23, at La Porte City Nursing and Rehab Center of natural causes.

He was born May 6, 1922, in Luxemburg, Dubuque County, son of John and Rosalia Brunsman Meier. He married Dorothy Ann Nilles Feb. 5, 1947, at St. John’s in Gilmore City.

The couple lived on the family farm where he farmed. He was a member at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Church in Eagle Center, where he ushered and did numerous woodworking projects.

Survived by his wife; four sons, Dennis (Patricia) of Waterloo, Nick (Nancy) of La Porte City, Mark (Barbara) of Cedar Falls and Kevin (Dana) of Adel; four daughters, Maureen (Andrews) of Waterloo, Lori Burkhardt of Cedar Falls, Jan (Hansie) Schutterle of Dysart and Peg (Drew) Hennings of Dysart; 29 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Marie Rottinghaus of Waterloo, Clara Guynn, and Agnes (Earl) Youngblut, all of La Porte City, and Ann Bussman of Stewartville, Minn.

Preceded in death by two grandsons, Jeff Tabor and Matt Schutterle; two brothers, Edward and Victor; and a son-in-law, Gene Burkhardt.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary of Mount Carmel, Eagle Center, with burial in church cemetery. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, with a 4:30 p.m. rosary. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Although Ott enjoyed farming and woodworking, he loved his family dearly, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and their smiles. Ott will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
