WATERLOO — Verner O. Matthias, 80, of Waterloo, died Thursday, March 22, at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City.

He was born Sept. 16, 1931, in Bremer County, son of Otto and Irene Wilkens Matthias. He married Elizabeth Riha April 12, 1958, in Waterloo. She died Sept. 20, 1989.

He was employed with John Deere for 30 years, retiring in 1987. Mr. Matthias was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in the Korean War.

Survived by two sons, David (Vicky) and Duane, all of Waterloo; a daughter, Donna (Samuel) Clark of Waterloo; six grandchildren, Matthew (Jess Gunderson) Matthias, Melissa Matthias, Jacob (Amber) Clark, Megan (Luke Gleason) Matthias, Mallory Matthias and Cody (Shana Marquand) Clark; and two great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by a brother, Victor.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery with military rites conducted by the Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31. Public visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hagarty – Waychoff – Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with a 4 p.m. 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil. Visitation will continue for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Verner enjoyed being a member of the Knights of Columbus and the N.E.I.C.B. Radio Club.
