HUDSON — Boyd Cameron Hamm, 79, of Hudson, died Wednesday, March 21, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home after a long battle with lung cancer.
He was born July 22, 1932, in Union, Iowa, son of Phillip and Jeanette Hamm. He married Linda Long, and they later divorced. He later married Lydia Runes Guerrero on July 1, 1967, at Rutgers Presbyterian Church, New York City.
Bud graduated from Union High School in Union, Iowa, in 1950. He graduated with his bachelor’s degree from Upper Iowa University in 1959. He earned his master’s degree from NE Missouri State University in secondary school administration, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Delta Honor Fraternity. He was a four-year starter in all sports in high school, and was a starting pitcher at Upper Iowa University and for the Air Force traveling baseball team.
Bud served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict from 1952-1956. Afterwards, he was stationed in Lake Charles, La., and later to the Sedalia Air Force Base in Missouri. He was voted by the Sedalia Rotary Club as the outstanding Airman of his Squadron for half-year. He received an honorable discharge as Staff Sergeant in 1956.
Bud was a teacher and coach at South Tama Community Schools, later becoming the assistant principal and athletic director for South Tama Jr. High. He was a member of national and state educational associations, and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. In 1976, Bud went to work for Area 7 Education Agency in which he started the Special Education program at Union High School in La Porte City, where he retired in 1995.
Bud also loved big band music, traveling, and attending many sporting events. He was a loving father and grandfather, and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Bud is survived by his wife; two sons, Steve (Stephanie) Hamm of Las Vegas, and Mark (Leslie) Hamm of Martinez, Calif.; one daughter, Angie (Dan) Kellogg of Stevens Point, Wis.; eight grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Frances Watson and Maxine Hayden; and one brother, Vincent Hamm.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 31 at the Community Church in Hudson. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the service. A private family burial will be held in Union, Iowa. Military rites by Hudson Amvet Anderson Post 82. Locke Funeral Home is in charge of funeral and cremation arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Hudson Community Church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
The family would like to thank Dr. Sampat, Dr. Cafaro, Dr. Singh and their staff for their professional expertise, caring, and compassion. We give our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Deters and the caregivers at the Cedar Valley Hospice for the loving and skillful care they provided Bud. Our special thanks to Rev. Ron Bartlett, Hugh and Carol Holms for their spiritual comfort and guidance. We also want to express our sincere appreciation to all for the overwhelming outpouring of support, love, and prayers during Bud’s illness which helped him live life to the fullest.
