CEDAR FALLS — Gary Schmidt, 60, of Des Moines, formerly of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, March 14, of cancer.

He was born Sept. 10, 1951, in Belle Fourche, S.D., son of Alexander “Smitty” and Betty Jean Schmidt.

He graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1969. Mr. Schmidt served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years. He educated and trained drivers for Smitty’s Road Oil Services and Safety Clean Corp. in Cedar Rapids for 30 years.

Survived by two sons, Jason (Kim) of Helotes, Texas, and Robert of Cedar Rapids; and two sisters, Candi (Michael) Freil of Centerville, Ohio, and Jane (Robert) Frost of Waterloo.

Preceded in death by an infant daughter, Heather; his parents; and a sister, Pamela Caughron.

Memorial service: 11 a.m. Monday with full military rites conducted at Cedar Falls AMVETS.
