CEDAR FALLS — Leo W. Barfels, 81, of Cedar Falls, formerly of Wyoming, Reinbeck and Grinnell, died Wednesday, March 7, at Windhaven Assisted Living of Western Home Communities.

He was born Oct. 26, 1930, in Lincoln, son of Walter and Catherine Staack Barfels. He married Kathryn Schwartz March 26, 1949, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She died March 12, 2010.

He graduated from Reinbeck High School in 1948. He worked at Farmers Co-op in Lincoln, owned a Standard Oil Service Station in Grinnell, and worked for Union Pacific Railroad in Laramie, Wyo., retiring in 1992.

Survived by a son, Danny (Kathy) Barfels of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Sandra (Charlie) Weaver of Orlando, Fla., and Susan Soderberg of Laramie, Wyo.; seven grandchildren, Kristen (Mark) Oliver, Ashley (Aaron) Prieksat, Natalie (Joseph) Spivey, Tyler (Kim) Weaver, Nels Soderberg, Hanni (Dusty) Scott and Dane Soderberg; and five great-grandchildren, Maxwell Oliver, Sierra Soderberg, Jackson Scott, Ava Prieksat and Kathryn Spivey.

Preceded in death by a sister, Nadine McCrary.

Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Locke Funeral Home, with a 7 p.m. public masonic service by Gladbrook Olivet Lodge 436 A.F. & A.M. and Waterloo Martin Lodge 624 A.F. & A.M.
