VERNON R. "SONNY" HANSEN was born on February 18, 1927 in Dike, Iowa, the son of Irenius and Helga (Weltz) Hansen. He died Sunday, June 6, 1999 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota at 72 years of age

He was a graduate of Cedar Falls High School and served in the U. S. Navy during W.W. II. Sonny married Donna Schneck on January 9, 1953 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waterloo, Iowa. He was a member of the Waterloo Wildcats Semi Professional Football Team for five years; a machinist at John Deere & Co. in Waterloo for seven years; worked at Rath Packing Co. in Waterloo for thirty-two years and was a lifetime member of the Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Hansen of Waterloo; his twin sister, Sis Backerman of Cedar Falls, Iowa and his five brothers, Einer Lindholm of Arkansas, Earl and Arthur Hansen, both of Cedar Falls, Paul Hansen of Dike and Roger "Stub" Hansen of Arkansas.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Irene Hansen and a brother, Victor Lindholm.

Funeral services were 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 1999 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with burial at Garden of Memories, both in Waterloo.

Memorials may be directed to the church, Exceptional Persons, Inc. and the Cedar Bend Humane Society.
