Evalina May Harris, 74, of Country View in Waterloo, Iowa, and formerly of Waverly and Shell Rock, died Tuesday, July 5, 2005, at Country View of natural causes.

Evalina was born on April 7, 1931, in Waverly, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur and Elsie (Howe) Harris. Evalina came to the Bremer County Home at the age of four with her family. On July 1, 1942, Evalina and her brother, Harold Harris, were taken to Woodward State Hospital and Training School in Woodward, Iowa. Evalina was at Woodward for approximately 10 years, where she attended school and also worked in the institution. She had previously attended math and writing classes at Bremer Care Facility (currently The Larrabee Center) five days per week. Evalina moved from the Larrabee Center to a Supported Community Living Apartment in Shell Rock on September 30, 1999. On June 24, 2002, she became a resident of Country View.

Evalina was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waverly. She enjoyed going out to eat and shopping. Evalina attended facility sponsored day trips and enjoyed visiting with friends and family at local nursing homes. Evalina had been an active participant of Special Olympics.

Evalina is survived by one sister, Maude Willhite of Waterloo, one brother, Ray Harris of Waterloo, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Dora and Leona and three brothers, Lawrence, Daniel and Harold.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, July 8, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock, with Pastor Wayne Stufflebeam officiating. There will be no visitation. Evalina’s body has been cremated. Memorials may be directed to the Harris family. Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly is assisting the family with services
