Marie E. Hursh, 79, of Cedar Falls, Iowa, died Friday November 25, 2005, at Ravenwood Nursing & Rehab Center, Waterloo, Iowa.

Marie was born on August 10, 1926 in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Leo and Barbara (Dirkes) Geater. She attended school in Waterloo. While a young girl she lived with her family in the communities of Nora Springs and Goodell, Iowa, and later again in Waterloo.

As a young woman, Marie worked as a waitress in the Waterloo area where she met her future husband, Richmond Hursh. The couple was married on November 10, 1945 in Waterloo and they made their home on the family farm north of Cedar Falls. Marie continued to waitress, working for several restaurants in Cedar Falls and for a time at the downtown bakery. She and Richmond farmed until 1983 when they retired. In 1987 they moved from the farm to their home in Janesville. Richmond died on January 4, 1997 and in 2001 she moved to live with her daughter Susie in Cedar Falls. On December 11, 2002 she moved to Ravenwood where she has since lived.

Marie was a longtime, faithful member of the Washington Chapel United Methodist Church, rural Cedar Falls, where she had been active with the Ladies Aid and U.M.W. of the church. She was also a very faithful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and her family was everything to her. Her grandchildren have said that she and Richmond were important teachers in their lives, and they always led by example.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, George and Mary Jane Hursh of Cedar Falls, her daughter, Susie Allee of Cedar Falls; three grandchildren, John Hursh of Cedar Falls, Joshua Allee and his fiancé, Laura Chestnut, Emily and Shawn Carlson of Cedar Falls; three great grandchildren, Austin, Abbey & Aaron Carlson; and by one sister, Margaret Dirkes of Waterloo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richmond; one son, Aaron Ernest Hursh in infancy; one son-in-law, Gary Allee; one great granddaughter, Analeigh Carlson and one brother, Edward Geater.

Services will be 10:30 am on Monday, November 28, 2005, at Washington Chapel Methodist Church, with burial in the Washington Chapel Cemetery, both rural Cedar Falls. Visitation will be on Sunday, November 27, 2005 at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Visitation will also be on Monday at the church for one hour prior to the services.
Memorials may be directed to the Church, Cedar Valley Hospice or Amenity Hospice.
