HUDSON - Russell John Harberts, 88, of Hudson died Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, at Affinity House in Waterloo.

He was born May 18, 1923, in Grundy Center, son of Fred D. and Lena (Casjens) Harberts. He married Merelyn L. Carter on Aug. 28, 1945, at Colfax Center Presbyterian Church in Holland.

He graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1941 and served in the U.S. Navy at the end of World War II. Following the war, he worked a short time at John Deere and then owned and operated Smith and Harberts Waste Paper Co.; drove a route collecting can milk from farms near Webster City, Sheffield, Ackley and Hampton; was employed with Rath Feeds for 17 years; and drove for UPS in Waverly for nine years. He then drove a school bus for Hudson Community School for nine years. He was a member of Trinity Bible Church in Cedar Falls.

Survived by his wife of Hudson; two sons, Bruce of Cedar Falls and Mark (Rose) of Elgin; two daughters, LeeAnn (Don) Gutknecht of Grimes and Jean Polk of Bakersfield, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Rev. Dick Harberts of Cedar Falls and Alfred (Wanda) Harberts of Grundy Center; a sister, Carolyn Harberts of Grundy Center; and sister-in-law, Janet Harberts of Grundy Center.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Rosemary; two brothers, Charles and Floyd; and four sisters, Delia Rust, Cora Slifer, Ruth Ascher and Isabelle Eiklinborg.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Bible Church in Cedar Falls with burial in Colfax Center Presbyterian Cemetery. Visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. today at Richardson Funeral Service and also for an hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the church.
