GILBERTVILLE - Arno R. Halbfass, 83, of Gilbertville, died Saturday, Jan. 28, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo.

He was born Feb. 16, 1928, in La Porte City, son of Herbert and Katherine Wright Halbfass. He married Dorothy J. West on Feb. 10, 1951, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church rectory, La Porte City.

Mr. Halbfass was a U.S. Navy veteran and was employed by John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for 37 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville.

Survived by his wife; three daughters, Judith (Todd) Holman of New Hampton, Janet (Donn) Quackenbush of Cedar Falls and Peggy (Lowell) Wichmann of Balaton, Minn.; three sons, Richard (Deb) of Percival, Duane (Noreen Halaghay) of Bellevue, Neb., and Darryl (Cheryll) of Omaha, Neb.; 15 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Colleen Halbfass of Des Moines.

Preceded in death by a sister, Merna Sears; and two brothers, Robert and Herbert.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Gilbertville, with burial in West View Cemetery, La Porte City, with full military honors by Nugent-Demuth American Legion Post 174 of Gilbertville. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at La Porte City Funeral Service, where there will be a 4:30 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. parish Scripture service. Visitation also an hour before services Wednesday at the church.
