[Waterloo Courier, Sunday, January 22, 2012]

Anna Margaret Griffith Randall, 68, passed away on Jan. 16, 2012, in Santa Fe, N.M., after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

She was born in Des Moines on May 21, 1943, and was the daughter of Lorraine and Russell Griffith. She grew up in Cedar Falls, and attended Iowa State Teachers College High School. She graduated from the University of Iowa in 1965. In 1966 she married Ross S. Randall of Waterloo. They were the proud parents of Emilie Anne and Russell Joseph, and three foster sons, David, Phan and Ha.

After living in Waterloo and Ely, Minn., for years, Anna moved to Santa Fe. For the last three years of her life, she lived in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

Anna owned several businesses: Three Deer Haven Bed and Breakfast in Ely, Spencer House Bed and Breakfast in Santa Fe and "Don't Sweat it" Be Cool in Mexico, San Miguel. Besides her business interests, Anna loved gardening, traveling and cooking. As a breast cancer survivor, she was an active advocate for breast cancer issues.

Anna was a life-long artist. She painted, made needlepoint works and wove fabrics. However it was in quilting that she found her true artistic voice. She created over 100 art quilts. In 2000 she designed a quilt for the Hawks and Heroes competition. Her quilt won first prize and went on to be exhibited in Japan.

In addition to her children Emilie and Joe, she is survived by her daughter-in-law, Heather, her three grandchildren, her two brothers, William (Jean) of Greenville, S.C., Joe (Melanie) of Cedar Falls and Ross Randall of La Paz, Mexico; and her sister-in-law, Jeri Gifford of Chicago.
