GEORGE SCHULER VETERAN OF 1861, DIES AT DUMONT---

--- Last Survivor of Charter Signers of Evang'l Church; Has 97 Descendants. ---

Dumont, Iowa -- George Schuler 89, a resident of Iowa since about 1855 and a veteran of the Union Army in the Civil War, died at his home here at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday. The funeral will be Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Evangelical church here, of which he was the last surviving charter member. Rev H.M. Reacker, pastor, and will be assisted by Rev. L.F. Smith, Aredale in conducting the service.

Mr. Schuler is survived by eight sons, two daughters, 40 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren. Two daughters and four sons preceded him in death.

--- Lived 50 years in Dumont ---

He was born May 8 1843, in Pennsylvania and left that state for Illinois when seven years old. A few years later he became a resident of Black Hawk county, Iowa and from there came to farm near Dumont about 50 years ago. Sixteen years ago he moved to town. Mr. Schuler enlisted in the Thirty-second Iowa Infantry at Waterloo in 1861, when 18 years old and served throughout the conflict, participating in 27 battles, the march to the sea and the review at Washington.

He married Ella Amanda Buehner in 1886, near Dunkerton. She died in 1889 and the same year he married Mrs. Sarah Frazier at Charles City. She died in 1924.

--- Immediate Survivors ---

The surviving sons and daughters are: Joseph Schuler, Allison; James Schuler, Hampton; Levi Schuler, Waterloo; Frank Schuler, Mason City; John, Fred, Alfred and Milton Schuler, and Mrs. Ed Lumry, all of Dumont; Mrs. John Baumgartner, Barnesville, Minn. A brother Joseph Schuler, 86 of Waterloo, and an sister, Mrs. Conrad Schuck, Parkersburg, also survive him. - Mr. Schuler was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic at Hampton Company C 31st IA Inf.
