Dr. Donald Linn Croghan died August 11, 2006 in Cedar Falls, Iowa after a short illness with cancer.
Don was born May 19, 1919, to Otis and Mary Croghan of Savanna, Illinois, where he grew up. After receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Idaho, he served his country in World War II as a Lieutenant in the U. S. Coast Guard in the Aleutian Islands. Following the war, he continued his education at Kansas State University, earning a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.
He met and married Sarah Katherine Utz while employed by the Department of Agriculture (USDA) working as a livestock inspector in St. Joseph, Missouri, where both of their children were born. He was subsequently sent to Michigan State University to study bacteriology, receiving a Master of Science degree and later a Doctorate in virology from Cornell University in New York. He and his wife resided in Nevada, Iowa for over forty years, with Don involved in research work with the USDA in Ames, Iowa. He retired in 1988 after 40 years of service, remaining in Nevada. Ill health caused him to live with his daughter Laura in Cedar Falls, Iowa the last six months of his life.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Katherine Croghan; his two children, Laura Virginia Calderwood and William Connett Croghan; two grandchildren, Anna Elizabeth Croghan and Connett William Croghan; a sister, Virginia Croghan; and numerous nieces and nephews who loved him and were loved by him.
A kind and generous man, Don was loved very much by family and friends. He was able to attend a family reunion in June of this year, an event that he treasured for his remaining time in this world.
Given the geographic proximity of family and friends, there will be no funeral service. Memorials may be directed to Laura Calderwood, 3407 Clearview Drive, Cedar Falls, IA 50613. All funds will be donated in his name to the Veterinary Virus Research Institute at Cornell University.
