Merle D. Picht died Tuesday, May 23, 2006 in Wilcox, Arizona , while traveling back to Iowa from his winter home. He was born June 30, 1930, in Lohrville, Iowa, the son of Ross and Hattie (Shoop) Picht.

On December 26, 1952, he was united in marriage to Harriet Smith in Cedar Falls. Merle graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with both B.A. and M.A. degrees.

Merle taught speech and theatre in the Waverly school district from 1952-1955 and in the Cedar Falls school district from 1955 until his retirement in 1993.

Survived by: his wife, Harriet of Brooklyn, Iowa; daughter, Terri (Walter) Brandt of Dysart; son, Dan Picht of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren, Andrew of Ames, Kati and Jessica of Dysart, Eric of Omaha and Sara of Branson, Missouri; and brother, Melvin of Hales Corner, Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, David; two sisters; and brother.
