[Waterloo Courier, Wednesday, April 8, 2009]

Carol Jean (Van Horn) Decker passed away on March 18, 2009, after a valiant fight with lung cancer. She was born July 28, 1931, in Cedar Rapids, where she attended elementary school and Sunday school. Later her family moved to Waterloo where she graduated from West Waterloo High School and further pursued her education in home economics at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls.

On Dec. 29, 1950, she married her high school sweetheart, James Decker, a native of Waterloo. They moved to Washington, D.C., where Carol was employed as a stenographer with the FBI. Her husband, James, was an FBI agent and they moved to many cities over the years.

She was a loving mother of three sons and a wonderful homemaker. As a member of the Presbyterian church in many cities where the family lived, she sang in church choirs and volunteered her time for many charitable causes. In recent years, she was a charter member of Mountain View Presbyterian Church, Las Vegas, and a member of the Community Presbyterian Church, Cedar City, Utah. She was a den mother for Cub Scouts and an avid supporter of her sons as they participated in sports and band activities.

Carol was a travel consultant with Prestige Travel in Las Vegas for 20 years. She and her husband traveled around the world on 17 ocean cruises. She was active in the Community Presbyterian Church Women's Club, a board member of the Shakespeare Guild and a volunteer host for Shakespeare actors. Carol loved gardening, hiking, fishing and riding ATVs in the Tushar mountains in southern Utah.

She is survived by her husband, James; three sons, David (Wanda) Decker of Fort Worth, Texas, James (Lori) Decker of Las Vegas and Gregory (Page) Decker of Reno, Nev.; three granddaughters, Tiffany, Brooke and Ashley; one grandson, Jonathan Decker; and two brothers, Jack (Sandy) Van Horn of Long Beach, Calif., and Jim (Karen) Van Horn of Colorado Springs, Colo.

A memorial service was held April 1 at 11 a.m. at Community Presbyterian Church, 2279 North Wedgewood Lane, Cedar City, Utah. Cremation services handled by Southern Utah Mortuary. She will be interned in Waterloo.

In lieu of flowers, make donations to Huntsman Cancer Center, Valley View Medical Center, Cedar City, Utah.
