WATERLOO - Alvin York Parsons, 88, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Dec. 18, at Manor Care Health Systems.

He was born May 9, 1923, in Flora, La., son of G.L. and Sarah Smith Parsons. He married Mabel E. Stubbs on Aug. 18, 1944, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua.

Mr. Parsons was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Force Cadet Corps. He was an instructor in tool and die at Hawkeye Community College, retiring in 1987.

Survived by his wife; a son, Terry (Linda) of Charles City; a daughter, Sandra Kirchmann of Waterloo; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, G.L. of Utah; and three sisters, Lela Long of Louisiana, Yvonne Owen of Mississippi and Joyce Truitt of Indiana.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Parsons; a son, Craig; three brothers, Troy, Floy and Vernon; and two sisters, Amelia Riley and Delores Iglehart.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Full graveside military rites will be conducted by Waterloo AMVETS Post 19 and Evansdale AMVETS Post 31. Visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where there will be a 6 p.m. public Masonic service. Visitation also for an hour before services Thursday.

Alvin was an avid reader with a variety of interests that included fishing, history and politics. He was active in the American Legion, Troop 118 of Denver as a scout leader, the Republican Party at the local, state and national levels, a member of Waterloo Lodge No. 105 A.F. & A.M., and was especially proud of being part of both his son's achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.
